he European Parliament'€™s (EP) hearing on human rightsin Papua is an important opportunity to raise concerns and press forimprovements in the area'€™s grave human rights situation, the New York-basedgroup, Human Rights Watch (HRW), has said.

'€œThe EP'€™s hearing on Papua should spotlight the serious human rights challenges and the Indonesian government'€™s needed reforms,'€ said HRW deputy Asia director Phelim Kine in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Monday. '€œIndonesia should realize that abuses by state security forces are a recipe for instability and lawlessness.'€

The European Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights on West Papua and Papua is expected to hold a hearing on Jan. 23 in Brussels
