oordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto has said the government of Australia under the leadership of Prime Minister Tony Abbott must acknowledge and understand Indonesian sovereignty and how it was breached by Australian naval ships.
'On the repatriation of asylum seekers who enter a territory or a country (including Australia), the country must handle it as mandated by United Nations (UN) conventions,' Joko said in a statement on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency.
The country, he said, must also work on the repatriation efforts together with organizations obliged to offer assistance to asylum seekers, that is, the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
To prevent such an incident from recurring, Djoko said Indonesia would continue to increase maritime patrols involving relevant stakeholders.
Earlier, the Indonesian government via the Office of the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister criticized the Australia navy for encroaching into Indonesian territory.
'Firmly, the Indonesian government highlights that a territorial breach for any reason is a serious problem for relations between the two countries,' said Deputy Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Vice Marshal Agus R.Barnas said in a press statement on Friday. (ebf)
