or the first time, state-run Hassanuddin University,Makassar, will be led by a woman after Dwia Aries Tina was elected its twelfthrector for the period 2014-2018 on Monday.
Three candidates were in the running: Dwia, a sociologist from the faculty of social and political affairs, and Ardi Wardihan Sinrang and Irawan Yusuf, both from the medical faculty. Dwia got 241 votes while Wardihan and Irawan received 128 and 71 votes respectively.
The current rector Idrus Paturusi said the election was peaceful and democratic and he hoped Dwia would be a successful leader and help the university overcome its problems, including student brawls.
'As a sociologist and a mother, I'm sure Dwia will be successful in solving student conflict,' Idrus said.
College students in Makassar are infamous for brawls and violent demonstrations.
