he Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) bestowed the first ever Most Valuable Player (MVP) title to men's doubles shuttlers Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan.
The panel of judges comprised PBSI chairman Gita Wirjawan, deputy secretary Achmad Budiharto, development chief Basri Yusuf, achievement development chief Rexy Mainaky and spokeswoman Yuni Kartika.
It was considered that Hendra/Ahsan had shown great improvement last year with the world men's doubles title in hand. They defeated another strong candidate pair, mixed doubles player Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir, and received prize money of Rp 1 billion (US$82,539).
'We recognize their efforts from a new pair to become world number one players [at the end of the 2013]. Hendra who is more experienced than Ahsan has been able to guide Ahsan so that they become a solid pair [on the court],' said Achmad Budiharto.
Hendra/Ahsan started as a pair in September 2012 and made their debut at the Denmark Open Super Series Premier. They were ranked 129th in the world when they started and reached the top spot within a year, bringing home a total of six prestigious titles; Malaysia Open Super Series, Indonesia Open Super Series Premier, Singapore Open Super Series, BWF World Championships, Japan Open Super Series and BWF Super Series Finals.
