Malaysian professionals only consider job switch for 30% salary hike

Malaysian professionals will only consider switching jobs for a 20%-30% salary hike, according to an international headhunting firm.

Good candidates were always in demand, said Robert Walters Malaysia'€™s country manager Sally Raj in referring to the global recruiter'€™s 2014 salary survey.

The survey forecast, based on insights gathered across 53 global offices, also found that job applicants took into consideration factors such as a track record of successful employee management, good corporate reputation, a clear career path and international exposure.

Sally said commercial-minded employees with strong skill sets will be headhunted.

'€œProfessionals should consider getting a second degree in business or economics to enhance their marketability,'€ she said.

She added that jobs in high demand are finance and accounting specialists, in-house legal and IT professionals and human resource practitioners focused on compensation and benefits and talent acquisition.

To retain staff, regular salary reviews and non-monetary rewards and incentives are crucial.

'€œThose who remain in current employment can expect a yearly increment of between 5% and 7%,'€ she said.

Commenting on the survey, Malaysian Employers Federation executive director Shamsuddin Bardan said work-life balance plays an important part in attracting and retaining talent.

'€œEmployees don'€™t just leave for higher pay. Management that does not appreciate talent and the lack of career advancement opportunities are among other reasons employees leave,'€ he added.
