Woman falls off Casablanca overpass

A

n accident involving a motorcycle and a car on the Casablanca overpass in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, late on Monday, resulted in the death of a woman, who fell off the 18-meter elevated road.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Tuesday that the motorcyclist, M. Faisal Bustamin, took the highway toward Tebet, South Jakarta, but turned around on the one-way street halfway.

'€œHe thought the police were citing motorcyclists who were illegally using the overpass and turned around to avoid the operation,'€ Rikwanto said, adding that no operation was taking place that night.

The motorcycle hit a car coming from the opposite direction, both of which were going at high speed, he cited witnesses.

Faisal'€™s pregnant wife, Windawati, was thrown off the overpass upon impact, landing in front of ITC Kuningan shopping mall, while Faisal fell off the bike, sustaining severe injuries, Rikwanto said.

The Casablanca overpass, which has been in operation since Dec. 30, consists of two separate roads connecting Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta to Tebet in South Jakarta. Each road consists of two lanes with around 70 centimeters of concrete wall at its sides.

Motorcycles are not allowed on the overpass due to safety reasons.

Aki, an ojek driver in front of ITC Kuningan, said that the motorcycle came from Tebet, instead of Tanah Abang.

'€œThe police officers were waiting in the middle of the overpass to cite motorcyclists, so many of them turned around to avoid the
operation,'€ he said. Hambali, a security officer from ITC Kuningan said that he saw Windawati as she was thrown from the highway and got stuck on a tree before falling to the street. '€œI heard a crash and then the victim fell to the ground,'€ he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

Windawati'€™s body was taken to the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta, while Faisal and the car'€™s driver, Tomi Raymond, were treated at Mintohardjo Naval Hospital, in Bendungan Hilir,
Central Jakarta.

Based on a preliminary investigation, the investigators determined that the motorcyclist was at fault because he was driving in the wrong direction. '€œHe also did not possess driver'€™s license,'€ Rikwanto said.

He said that it was possible to name Faisal a suspect even though his wife died in the accident.

'€œHe [Faisal] could be charged with Article 310 of the 2009 Trafic Law on negligence resulting in death,'€ Rikwanto said.

However, both Faisal and Tomi could not be questioned yet as they were injured, he said.

In response to the accident, Rikwanto said that the Traffic Police, in cooperation with officers from the Transportation Agency would guard the area.

However, he said that the police expected motorists to follow traffic laws. '€œUsually motorists only follow the rules if they see policemen.'€ (nai)
