Gita resignation sparks controversy among lawmakers

G

ita Wirjawan'€™s decision to resign from his post as Trade Minister has sparked controversy among lawmakers. Gita, who cited ethical reasons and his intention focus more on his new political calling as reasons behind his resignation, was deemed by many to be among the group of potential young leaders who has both integrity and the right capability.

Lawmaker Hendrawan Supratikna of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), for example, praised the decision, saying that many other ministers who are political party chairmen like Suryadharma Ali, Hatta Rajasa and Muhaimin Iskandar should seriously consider to following Gita'€™s lead instead of maintaining their posts.

'€œGita has been set a good example in carrying out his political duties. Other ministers who are in a similar situation should seriously consider following his lead,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com on Friday.

As for the critics, Airlangga Hertarto of the Golkar Party, who also chairs the House'€™s Trade Commission, said Gita had chosen the wrong time to resign from his post. He said right now, the ministry was still in the middle of finalizing the trade law draft with the House'€™s Trade Commission.

'€œHe leaves his post in the middle of an important discussion regarding the trade law draft. But I fully respect his decision, it is just the wrong time to do it,'€ he said.(dic)
