he Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Medan has warned journalists working in areas affected by the eruption of Mount Sinabung in Karo regency, North Sumatra, to prioritize safety.
On Saturday, journalists in North Sumatra mourned the death of Rizal Syahputra, or Jack, who was one of 14 people killed by pyroclastic clouds in Suka Meriah village, Naman Teran district, Karo regency. Rizal is the deputy chief editor of zonasumut.com, an online media based in Medan, North Sumatra.
'Before carrying out journalistic duties, they must map out dangerous zones declared by authorities,' said AJI Medan head Soetana Monang Hasibuan in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
'AJI Medan has offered its condolences to Rizal Syahputra's family and the families of other victims,' Monang went on.
The AJI is calling upon media institutions to equip their journalists with proper equipment and facilities, including those needed keep safe.
'Don't give any assignments to journalists without giving them proper facilities that will keep them safe as they work in disaster areas,' said Monang.
The AJI has also urged journalists not to report from dangerous zones. 'Don't be ambitious to get exclusive news because it's not worth it if your lives are put at stake,' said Monang. (ebf)
