heIndonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) has asked the House of Representatives tostop mulling the Criminal Code Procedure (KUHAP) revision draft as it couldweaken law enforcers' powers.
The latest KUHAP draft omitted the right to probe, meaning that law enforcers are no longer able to perform early investigation in a case. There is no explanation behind the omission available.
'The Corruption Eradication Commission [KPK] will be hurt the most as it could no longer perform activities like banning, wiretapping and asset freezing, which have been very helpful in fighting graft,' he said.
He suspected that the draft deliberation was, by design, masterminded by corruptors and their accomplices.
"We fear this might be a counter measure instigated by those involved in graft seeking to misuse the legislative process," he said.
He said the ICW would campaign to raise public awareness so politicians supporting the KUHAP draft deliberation would not be reelected at the upcoming legislative election.(tjs)
