overnor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo launched on Wednesday a new Transjakarta route connecting the upscale Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) housing complex in North Jakarta with the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta.
The governor said he was upbeat that his latest strategy would manage to persuade middle- to upper-class workers to switch to public transportation.
'We are aiming to connect 20 housing compounds, mostly elite ones that have park-and-ride facilities, to Transjakarta bus corridors.
The buses are convenient, and we expect residents to switch from their cars to Transjakarta buses,' he said at the PIK complex on Wednesday.
Bus fares for the new route have been set at Rp 6,000 (49 US cents), which is double the price of an economy Kopaja or Metro Mini ticket.
Jokowi emphasized that the new bus route would not affect existing routes, which are operated by Kopaja and Metromini.
'The Transjakarta buses target different passengers than Kopaja and Metromini,' he said.
The PIK-Monas route, which will be served by 18 buses, will be integrated with Transjakarta Corridor 1 serving Blok M-Kota and Corridor 12 plying the Pluit-Tanjung Priok route. It will also be integrated with Kota and Gambir train stations.
The bus will depart from Pluit Fresh Market and stop at a number of locations before entering the Transjakarta bus lane, including the Cordova home-office compound, PIK Hospital, the Muara Angke Bridge, Green Bay/Bay Walk in Pluit, Pantai Mutiara and the Fatahilah Museum.
The new route, which will be managed by PT Transjakarta, will operate from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on a daily basis.
The Jakarta Transportation Agency is scheduled to launch another route, connecting Kalibata City in South Jakarta and Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta, next week.
The Tanah Abang-Kalibata City route ' to be served by 12 buses ' will be integrated with Transjakarta's Corridor 1 and Corridor 9, serving Pinang Ranti-Pluit, as well as Tanah Abang, Dukuh Atas and Kalibata stations.
