Comments: The story of APP, Wilmar, Greenpeace

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) said it would call on NGOs, governments and businesses to collaborate to protect Indonesia'€™s forests. This call came Wednesday, one year to the day after the company announced its Forest Conservation Policy, and as Greenpeace announced the suspension of its global campaign against APP.  (By Zulfahmi, Jakarta)

Your comments:

This article is very interesting. First, it highlights the transition of Greenpeace from just radical advocacy (many perceive it as too extreme at times) to collaboration and being part of the solution.

Second, it marks APP'€™s rise from the ashes to become a leader in forest certification, conservation management and environmental responsibility; a transformation from assuming its business-as-usual attitude to realizing a strong commitment coupled with verifiable action and field accomplishments to achieve responsible natural resource management.

Third, I agree that the problem of forest deforestation and degradation in Indonesia needs a widespread approach to include the combined efforts of NGOs, business players, the government and regional administrations and civil society as a whole.

This is very good news indeed, to see a firm commitment to its pledges on paper. I am holding my breath in anticipation of APP'€™s implementation to '€œtransfer the conservation landscape'€ in Indonesia on a scale never seen before.
