The partial closure of Jl
he partial closure of Jl. Thamrin, which connects theHotel Indonesia traffic circle and the National Monument (Monas) in CentralJakarta, caused gridlock in surrounding streets due to a police drill.
Motorists had to take other roads when a lane on Jl. Thamrin was closed for only 30 minutes as the city police - tasked with maintaining security in the upcoming elections - conducted a drill on handling protests, in front of the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) office.
Jefri, a motorcyclist, said the police should have changed the drill's timing to minimize traffic disruption.
He suggested the drill could have been conducted at 8 a.m, an hour before traffic hit its peak. '[They also] could've conducted the exercise in the afternoon, not at this hour when people are getting to work,' he said, as quoted by kompas.com.
