he starred-hotel room occupancy rate in Bali was 62.53 percent in December 2013, up by 1.59 percent from 60.94 percent in the previous month, the Bali chapter of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has reported.
'The hotel occupancy rate in Bali at the end of last year was regarded as quite good as it exceeded 50 percent allowing hotels to cover operational costs and employee salaries,' BPS Bali chapter head Panusunan Siregar said in Denpasar on Sunday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said the number of foreign tourists in Bali reached 299,013 in December 2013, up by 11.54 percent compared to the same month in 2012.
Panusunan said hotels in Tabanan regency had the highest occupancy rate, which stood at 73.13 percent in December 2013, up from 68.07 percent in the previous month.
Hotels in Badung regency ranked second with 67.65 percent occupancy, down from 70.97 percent in the previous month. Gianyar's occupancy rate stood at 59.23 percent, up from 54.67 percent.
Karangasem regency recorded a 48.86 percent occupancy rate, up from 35.47 percent in the previous month, while Denpasar and Buleleng regency had an occupancy rate of 44.80 percent and 40.81 percent respectively.
Panusunan said three other regions in Bali, comprising Bali regency, Jembrana regency, and Klungkung regency, did not have any starred hotels.
According to the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali chapter, the island has 2,260 starred hotels and non-star hotels with a total capacity of 56,971 rooms. This figure does not include the villas and homestays that are now spreading to more remote areas of Bali, though many have yet to obtain legal permits. (idb/ebf)
