The rupiah weakened by 18 points to Rp 12,176 per US dollar from Rp 12,158 on Monday afternoon.
Monex Investindo Futures head of research, Ariston Tjendra, said in Jakarta on Monday that the US dollar had strengthened again against several global currencies, including the rupiah, as investors expected that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) would further reduce its financial stimulus.
'Such expectations will support the US dollar against most world currencies,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Ariston said market players had paid a lot attention again to the US stimulus-reduction plans, with consequent negative effects on the rupiah.
'Such a situation has encouraged market players to shift their assets to safer havens,' said Ariston.
Meanwhile, the Bank Indonesia (BI) median rate on Monday recorded the rupiah as having strengthened to Rp 12,166 per US dollar from Rp 12,176 on Friday. (ebf)
