Disenchanted Jokowi wields axe as 30 officials replaced, transferred

Governor Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo has once again opted for an administration reshuffle, replacing and transferring more than 30 high-ranking officials.

Jokowi also established a new working unit consisting of seven high-ranking officials that will be led by two outsiders who are yet to be appointed.

'€œI know the people who work and those who don'€™t. I spend most of my time in the field. I don'€™t want empty reports. I follow progress and take note of failure. The people of Jakarta are waiting for changes,'€ the governor told new officials in his speech.

Among the officials removed from strategic positions were Jakarta Transportation Agency head Udar Pristono and Jakarta Sanitation Agency head Unu Nurdin.

The Transportation Agency came under the spotlight after the media drew attention to the damaged buses that were recently delivered from China, while the Sanitation Agency encountered trouble for not submitting a proposal to procure 200 trash trucks in the draft city budget as ordered by Deputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama.

Udar and Unu were transferred to the new working unit, called the Governor'€™s Team for the Supervision of Development.

Other members of the team are former Education Agency head Taufik Yudi Mulyanto, former Social Affairs Agency head Kian Kelana, former Communications and Information Agency head Sugiyanta, former Maritime Affairs and Agriculture Agency head Ipih Ruyani and former National and Political Unity Agency head Zainal Musappa.

Speaking to reporters after his speech, Jokowi said he was still unhappy with his subordinates'€™ performances.

'€œThe problem is, when I gave an order, [some officials] didn'€™t carry it out. They just gave me empty reports, hoping to make me happy. I don'€™t like that. The people of Jakarta need tangible results,'€ Jokowi said.

He added he would not hesitate to opt for another reshuffle if the new officials did not meet his expectations.

'€œ[That won'€™t change] until I find personnel who know what they should do and perform well. A smart official should be able to adjust to a new job in no time,'€ he cited.

The reshuffle followed the first in February last year, when Jokowi inaugurated 20 new officials, including Public Works Agency head Manggas Rudy Siahaan.

Jakarta Employment Agency I Made Karmayoga said the newly-established working unit was tasked with advisory work.

'€œThey will discuss ideas and report to the governor. The team will be led by professionals appointed by the governor,'€ he said, adding that the governor had yet to select candidates to lead the team.

When asked about the new post, Udar said it was a regular tour of duty.

'€œAs a civil servant, I have to be ready to be posted to any position. I hope I will be useful to the team,'€ he said briefly.

Meanwhile, Unu said he saw the appointment as a '€œblessing'€.
