W. Java police ordered to shoot on sight in motorcycle gang crimes

W

est Java Police chief Insp. Gen.Muhammad Iriawan has ordered every police officer in the region to shoot on sight at motorcycle gang members who are committing a crime. The decision was madefollowing concerns about the brutality of motorcycle gang members who oftenseriously injure their victims.

'€œFirm action is our last resort. This is taken if persuasive measures fail to deliver,'€ Iriawan said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

He assured that the police would execute the shoot-on-sight policy based on discretion, when a crime endangers both the lives of the public and the law enforcer.

Motorcycle gang members, especially in Bandung and several other cities in West Java, are notorious for their brutality. Media record that they often work in groups and commit crimes such as assaulting people at random, robbing minimarkets and stealing. (dic)
