Anggito Abimanyu has resigned from his post as a lecturer at the Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University (UGM) following an accusation that he had plagiarized an article in a piece he submitted to Kompas.
Your comments:
It's quite a day indeed when a respected faculty member of a highly respected university could be so frivolous about one of the most important pillars of academic integrity. The evidence published by detik.com looks like a wholesale cut and paste exercise rather than the inadvertent omission of a reference of digitally misplaced citations.

If Anggito resigns from his post, he will set an excellent example for the rest of us. There are hundreds of cases regarding plagiarism in this country, but they are not detected. It is a common practice here. Abroad, scholarly work is viewed as property.
If you take someone's work, it means you steal or rob him or her and this leads to a serious legal problem. You can be sued and, without a doubt, you have stolen someone's belongings. As a consequence of this, you deserve jail consequences and/or you are obliged to pay for the damage you have committed. Unfortunately, this has been done by an academician who should have advised his students not to do this. You are on the right track, Mr. Anggito, because you are going to leave your academic job. Let's develop this terrible country holistically.

Anyone can make a mistake. But committing plagiarism is the most stupid mistake that one could ever make in this digital era. Still, it is fortunate for him that he did not do so in international journals. Otherwise, his career would be finished.

It is just too early to judge him. But we already know that Mr. Anggito has submitted his resignation letter and now we must just wait and see what the ethics committee of the university says. I hope the decision will be good for all of us.
