Govt told to mull law on Internet content, ad management

The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) strongly encouraged the government along with the House of Representatives to start deliberating regulation of the content and advertising management in cyber media.

AJI secretary-general Suwarjono said the effort could be marked by revoking the existing Information and Electronic Transaction Law No. 11/2008, and replacing it with an Internet governance law.

The statement was made at a seminar held in Bandar Lampung on Saturday.

He said that the Information and Electronic Transaction Law was irrelevant to support the demands for fair and democratic Internet regulation among civil communities, industries and government itself.

"In a number of cases, that law even became a boomerang for freedom of expression in the public sphere," he told a seminar held in Bandar Lampung on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He went on that another challenging problem within cyber media was widespread plagiarism.

Speaking at the same seminar, brightstars.co.id chief executive officer, Pandu Wirawan Arief, said from the advertising perspective, almost the whole portion of advertisement on the Internet went to global players and not local players.

"Local companies account for only 30 percent or Rp 1.6 trillion of the Rp 3.8 trillion that is spent on Internet advertising in Indonesia. The rest goes to Google, Facebook, Twitter and other global brands," he said.

According to the latest data, there are 85 million Internet users in Indonesia right now with most of them accessing through smartphones.
