aw and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsuddin has deniedthat revisions to the Criminal Code (KUHP) and the Criminal Law Procedures Code(KUHAP) currently being considered will hurt the Corruption Eradication Commission(KPK).
'The KUHP and KUHAP are designed as general laws while institutions like the KPK are based on special regulations, like the Anticorruption Law. Thus, none of these revisions will hurt the KPK or dismantle its authority,' Amir said as quoted by Antara news agency on Tuesday.
He said the sole reason behind the deliberation was because it was mandated by the 1963 National Law Seminar. The seminar suggested that the government replace the KUHP and KUHAP, which were the products of Dutch colonial rule.
The KUHP and KUHAP debate has drawn suspicion from graft activists who state revising the codes will undermine the KPK.
A major reason behind the activists' protests is that under the revisions, the KPK may no longer be allowed to conduct wiretapping, a strategy that has been deemed successful in bringing so many officials to court on bribery charges. (idb/dic)
