Protests roil Peruvian tourist region of Cuzco

Clashes between Peruvian police and hundreds of protesters in the tourist region of Cuzco have left at least five people injured.

Cuzco union official Wilfredo Alvarez says organizers called the protest to demand that the government of President Ollanta Humala fulfill its promises to build infrastructure projects such as a gas pipeline and an international airport.

Police fired tear gas at demonstrators armed with sticks and rocks on Wednesday, the second day of protests that have left a total of five injured.

Deputy Tourism Minister Jose Gamarra said the priority of authorities was to protect the safety of tourists.

The National Tourism Chamber said the protests have caused $2 million in losses and 5,000 foreign tourists were not able to visit Incan archaeological sites, including the citadel of Machu Picchu.
