he Batam Prosecutor's Office has announced its intention toinvestigate graft allegations behind the organization of a New Year's fireworkparty that cost the state budget Rp 1.1 billion.
Prosecutors summoned Rudi Panjaitan from the Batam administration on Friday. Rudi was asked to explain the procurement process of the fireworks during the New Year celebration.
'I was asked to explain everything related to firework procurement,' he said.
Batam Prosecutor's Office head Yusron said his office had suspected a lack of transparency behind the procurement. He said that for the event in question, the organizer was directly appointed while according to the regulations, the local government should have held an open procurement tender.
Yusron said he had learnt from similar events in Jakarta that had spent less funds.
'How come a similar event in Jakarta that took place in more locations cost less than the one held by the Batam government?' he asked.(dic)
