The robbers were identified as Syaiful Kalam, Ahmad Yanto, Putra Pratama, Andri Kurniawan, Rudiyanto, Maryoto, Sujoko, Slamet Riyanto, Kayat and Bambang Heryanto. They were arrested in different locations throughout the province.
The police also confiscated six homemade weapons, 94 bullets, a Daihatsu Terios and Rp 4 million in cash.
The men have been charged with violating the Criminal Code (KUHP) and could face a maximum of 12 years in prison if proven guilty.
Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Dwi Priyanto said the gang was widely known as the Lampung gang, referring to where most of the members were from.
He said the gang was notorious for its brutality when carrying out robberies and that most of the criminals were old timers who had on several previous occasions been convicted of similar charges.
Central Java Police crime division director Sr. Comr. Purwadi Arianto said the police had tracked the gang from two robberies in Grobogan regency and other robberies in Kudus, where they had managed to flee with Rp 1.2 billion.
'It took us a while to arrest them as we had to be mindful of some of the victims, who were traumatized by their experiences and who needed more time to share information with us,' Wonosobo Police's crime division head Adj. Comr. Sunarto, who also on site, said. (dic)
