UN says 703 Iraqis killed in violence in January

T

he United Nations says a total of 703 Iraqis have been killed due to violence in February, excluding deaths of insurgents and those from an embattled western province.

The figures issued Saturday by the U.N.'s mission to Iraq show that 564 civilians and 139 members of the security forces were killed last month. UNAMI added that 1,381 more Iraqis, including 1,179 civilians, were wounded.

The capital, Baghdad, was the worst affected with 239 people killed.

The death toll for January stood at 733, also excluding Anbar province, fighting is ongoing between security forces and al-Qaida-linked militants. The statement cited problems in verifying "the status of those killed and injured as civilians."

Both statements also did not give a figure for militant dead.
