In 1999, woman made up 9 percent of the House of Representatives, 45 of its overall 500 members. In 2004, this increased to 10.7 percent, 62 of 550 members. And in 2009, women made up 17.6 percent of the House, 99 members of a total 560.
Although, there is still a way to go, Election Law No. 12/2003 mandated that women should make up 30 percent of the Regional and Provincial Legislative Councils (DPRD), the House and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD).
Election Law No. 10/2008 also regulates that the 30 percent threshold is one of the primary requirement for parties' participation: If parties cannot fulfill this requirement, they are automatically disqualified.
For the 2014 general election, the General Elections Commission (KPU) has said that the number of women vying for seats at the House had increased compared to 2009. From the 6,607 legislative candidates, 2,467 are women. And for the DPD, there are 119 women among the 945 candidates. ' Benni Yusriza
