S

ecurity authorities foiled attempts by 984 undocumented migrants to cross the waters of West Java regencies Sukabumi and Cianjur to get to Australia last year, according to an immigration affair officer.

"The undocumented migrants mostly hailed from the Middle East and some from Bangladesh," head of the Sukabumi immigration office Eryana Sastra said in on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Eryana said the 984 migrants were detained in several immigrant detention centers and that at least 269 people were held at a detention center in Bogor.

Up to 18 of them were deported to Jordan and another one to Lebanon, he said.

Eryana further explained that most of the migrants who struggled to cross over to Australia were from Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, and that they claimed to be afraid of returning to their respective countries.

All the needs of the migrants housed in detention centers were taken care of by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), he noted.
