ndonesia's new ambassador to New Zealand, Jose Antonio Morato Tavares, presented his letter of credentials to the Pacific nation's governor general, Jerry Mateparae, in Wellington on Wednesday.
Tavares, who is Indonesia's 15th ambassador since the Indonesian Embassy in Wellington opened in 1966, also delivered a warm message from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to the governor general, saying that Jakarta strongly hoped to enhance cooperation with Wellington, Indonesia's deputy ambassador to New Zealand P.L.E. Priatna said.
In his opening remarks, Mateparae greeted Tavares in Indonesian, according to a press statement by the Indonesian embassy. 'Yang Mulia, selamat datang ke Selandia Baru [Excellency, welcome to New Zealand],' he said.
Mateparae added, 'Indonesia has been a leader, not only in ASEAN, but also Asia Pacific and the world. Indonesia has been a priority partner in New Zealand's bilateral and regional cooperation.'
He added that the two countries had opportunities for enhancing cooperation in the trade, geothermal, agricultural and education sectors.
New Zealand annually offers scholarships to 50 Indonesian students to study in the Pacific nation under the New Zealand-ASEAN Scholars Awards scheme.
Tavares' previous position was director of political and security at the Foreign Ministry's Directorate General of ASEAN Cooperation.
On Wednesday, Mateparae also received credentials from the ambassadors of Uganda, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia and Slovakia.
