Did you know? History of the poll body

I

ndonesia has seen different poll bodies throughout its history. This year'€™s general election is the fourth election held by the General Elections Commission (KPU).

The 1999 general election was the first run by the KPU, which at that time consisted of government and party representatives. This combined membership, however, created prolonged conflict within the poll body.

In 2003, the government changed the structure of the KPU, making it more independent by consisting of only seven independent and non-partisan members. In the new poll body, there are no representatives from the government or political parties.

Based on Election Law No. 12/2003, a candidate for KPU membership is proposed by the President and then should get approval from the House of Representatives. To keep the poll body independent, the KPU members are required to have no political party affiliation.

During Soeharto'€™s 32-year presidency, the general election was held by the General Elections Institution (LPU), which was led by the home minister and its members '€” government officials and party representatives.

The first general election in Indonesia in 1955 was organized by the Indonesian Election Committee (PPI), whose members were appointed by the President. '€” Petrus Kristamtomo
