Indonesia to apply competency standards on expatriates

I

ndonesia is ready to apply theNational Working Competency Standards (SKKNI) for expatriates who work in theindustrial sector in line with Law No. 3/2014 on industry.

"The application is aimed at controlling the selection of expatriates working in Indonesia," Industry Ministry secretary-general Ansari Bukhari said in Kuta, Bali, on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.

"The SKNNI, for example, has to be applied in welding technology because any incompetency there will have significant implications," he said.

Ansari explained that it was one of the requirements for labor security and its application would be made compulsory in specific fields.

Meanwhile, the government will encourage Indonesian workers to obtain certification from the Profession Certification Institution (LSP), using the same reference as the SKNNI.

"With such certificates, workers can apply for jobs in Indonesia or abroad," said Ansari.

Industry Ministry director general for medium and small-scale industry Euis Saedah underlined the importance of certification in line with the SKKNI.

"Various skills for workers need standardization because in 2015, the door will open and no one can prevent foreign workers from entering Indonesia," Euis said.

If Indonesian workers'€™ skills are in line with the SKKNI, it will be easier for them to compete when the ASEAN Economic Community is launched in 2015, Euis added. (krb)
