Yogya street musicians in fatal machete clash

A

street musician identified as Agus Purwanto was found dead, while his friend Joko Santoso sustained substantial injuries, at Giwangan bus terminal in Yogyakarta on Sunday.

The two were allegedly the victims of a fight with two other street musicians over what appeared to be a territory dispute.

Yogyakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Slamet Santoso said the police had arrested two street musicians by the names of David Viriyanto and Budi Harto in relation to Agus'€™ death.

'€œWe have charged both David and Budi with multiple offenses, including premeditated murder, which carries the maximum sentence of death,'€ he said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

He said according to the police'€™s early questioning, the incident originated when Agus and Joko were prohibited from performing at the bus terminal by David and Budi, who reasoned the bus terminal was their territory and only they were allowed to perform there.

Agus and Joko then challenged David and Budi to a fight, with the latter two accepting. The four arranged to settle the dispute early on Saturday morning at the bus terminal. Agus and Joko arrived intending to fight with their bare hands but David and Budi attacked with machetes, leading to Agus'€™ death and Joko sustaining serious injuries.

Joko later reported the incident to the police while David and Budi, who fled the terminal after the clash, were later arrested in nearby town of Klaten. (dic)
