New official vows to provide greater protections for migrant workers

Newly appointed head of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Placement and Protection Agency (BNP2TKI) Gatot Abdullah Mansyur has vowed to provide more protections for Indonesian migrant workers.

The former Indonesian ambassador to Saudi Arabia said he would improve the regulations on the registration and placement of migrant workers so as to prevent problems in host countries.

He gave assurances that his agency would not allow the same mistakes to recur in the future.

Commenting on Gatot's appointment, rights activist Anis Hidayah of Migrant Care expressed skepticism that he was the right man for the job.

She said Gatot had a poor track record as an official and had failed to save Ruyati, a migrant worker who was sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia while Gatot was ambassador.

Gatot replaces Jumhur Hidayat, who is now joining the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

To date, around 37 million Indonesian citizens are working overseas. Most of them are working as domestic assistants and in plantations. (gda/dic)
