he National Narcotics Agency (BNN),in cooperation with Soekarno-Hatta International Airport police and Customs andExcise officers, has arrested 11 drug smugglers, mostly foreigners, in the past month.
The airport's Customs and Excise chief, Okto Irianto, said on Friday that the smugglers had used various modus operandi in their efforts to smuggle drugs into the country.
'We have also confiscated 5 kilograms of crystal meth and 20 ecstasy pills, worth around Rp 7 billion (US$613,252),' Okto said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Friday.
He said according to preliminary questioning, the suspects had admitted that they were part of international drug syndicates based in East Asia and West Africa.
'They are part of the Chinese and Nigerian syndicates,' he said.
Indonesia is one of the world's fastest growing markets for international drug syndicates. In fact, some of the syndicates have reportedly already built labs to produce drugs for local markets. (dic)
