he Tangerang District Court panel ofjudges has sentenced Yuki Irawan, the owner of a kitchenware factory inTangerang, to 11 years in prison and a fine of Rp 500 million after he wasfound him guilty of mistreating and torturing 62 employees, a small number of whichwere underage.
'The defendant violated multiple laws, namely the Anti-Trafficking Law, the Child Protection Law and the Industry Law,' presiding judge Asiadi Sembiring told the court on Tuesday.
He pointed to certain aggravating factors and said the defendant's actions could be categorized as 'inhumane' and the defendant had not demonstrated regret for his actions.
The sentences were milder than the 13-year prison term and Rp 17.8 billion fine in restitution to the employees that prosecutors had earlier sought.
The prosecutors said it needed to consult with its superior officers before making a statement.
The defendant's lawyer, Slamet Yuwono from OC Kaligis Law Firm, stated the defendant would file an appeal immediately.
'The panel did not listen to all our witnesses, therefore it failed to ascertain the whole picture of this case,' he said.
The case originated last year when two out of 34 employees held at Yuki's factory escaped and reported to the police, who then searched the factory and found more employees.
According to police questioning, the employees were forced to work beyond normal working hours and earned salaries way below the required standard.
Many activists and fellow workers have said the employees are victims of modern slavery. (dic)
