A cargo ship, called Journey, sank after colliding with a passenger vessel, the Lambelu, at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, East Java, early on Tuesday.
Following the collision, 133 containers that were due to be shipped to Lembar Port in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), became submerged and could not be salvaged.
"Port administration officials are questioning the Journey's captain, Kapel Hukom, to gather information about the contents of the lost containers," said Marzuki, head of administration at Tanjung Perak Port.
"The incident occurred at 2:25 a.m., and the cargo ship sank one hour later," Marzuki said.
After pulling up anchor, the ship was carried by ocean currents toward the Lembelu, which was berthed at the port, making the collision unavoidable.
"The collision resulted in the cargo ship taking on water, causing it to sink," he said.
No casualties were reported following the accident. The 17 crewmen on the Journey were rescued by other ships, having abandoned ship.
Meanwhile the Lambelu, which belongs to state shipping company Pelni, suffered no serious damage. (yln)
