'We have been able to prevent state losses of up to Rp 2.5 billion [US$220,000],' Sr. Comr. Alex Mandalika of the National Police told a press conference on Friday.
He said the police became aware of the illegal activities on Feb. 10 when they seized two Landing Craft Tanks (LCT) on the Meriam River, Samarinda, in East Kalimantan.
"The first ship, Cinta Damai, was carrying 37,289 tons of diesel fuel and 47,734 tons of marine gas oil. The other ship, Sriwijaya, was carrying 182,956 tons of diesel fuel. We have also seized two tanks with a capacity of five and ten tons respectively," Alex said
According to the police, the LCTs would take the fuel from tankers in the middle of the sea and then sell it.
JMS, who is now detained at the National Police detention center, has been accused of violating articles of the law on oil and gas transportation.
Head of sub-directorate V of the Special Economic Crimes Division, Sr. Comr. Bahagia Danchi, corroborated that the fuel was intended for various companies in the region.
"We have also worked together with Pertamina on this case. The fuel confiscated was auctioned, making around Rp. 1.2 billion," he said.(fss)
