em>Your comments on findings by the Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) that violence against women is on the rise in Greater Jakarta, after the murder of 17 women between January and March this year.

This record rise in cases of violence against women must not be taken lightly. It should be considered an outcome of this country'€™s weak legal, political and social protection.

Up until now, there has been a lack of strong legal advocacy for the female victims of domestic violence, rape, forced child labor and underage marriage, forced labor overseas, and a number of other horrendous forms of abuse and harassment.

Second, the formal representation of women in the House of Representatives is far below the figure of nominal national representation in terms of the number of women in the country'€™s population, namely 50 percent. Third, on the social aspects, women are viewed with lust by men, as mere sexual objects.

The rampant pornography and adultery perpetrated by men, the misuse of Facebook and other social media sites, and false religious interpretations are social culprits that hamper all attempts to protect women in this country.

What the IPW has to watch first is the police. If the police cannot manage themselves, how can they manage others on increasing violence against women? First things first, and that'€™s the police.

It was shocking to read the results revealed by the IPW about these atrocities and murders, and the dumping of women on the streets.

Bekasi and Tangerang send a shiver down my spine, as they are so unsafe. And I live in Tangerang. If traveling teaches wisdom, then reading local newspapers opens your eyes to the local realities. I hope every woman will take care and exercise caution.

First, the backgrounds of the murders need to be taken into consideration, because they indicate different problems that need to be assessed in order to prevent such things from happening in the future.

Furthermore, I hope that young women who read these statistics will think twice before they meet men online/via Facebook, because ultimately you do not know who you are dealing with and what their intentions are.

One simple test of the safety of a city is to see the number of females out walking at night. That'€™s a proven method I have used around the world.

My thinking on various areas of Jakarta is mixed. Some downtown areas are safe, while various pockets are definitely perceived as unsafe. If only Mr. Neta S. Pane would create a map of perceived safety all around Jakarta, that would be a super plus.

The report on this issue says nine out of the 17 cases have not yet been solved. That means the police have solved eight of the cases. Congratulations to the Jakarta Police, you are doing your job.
