Fantasy World (Dufan) at Ancol Dreamland Park in North Jakarta on Thursday launched a new attraction based on the 20th Century Fox animated-film Ice Age.

Ice Age: Sid'€™s Arctic Adventure advertises itself as '€œIndonesia'€™s first frozen adventure'€, and was built in partnership with 20th Century Fox and Canada-based water-park and attractions design company Whitewater West.

The arctic-themed flume ride opened to the public Thursday, in a ceremony that included a parade featuring the film'€™s characters.

Operation director of construction company PT Pembangunan Jaya Winarto said that the ride was part of the theme park'€™s new '€œDufan Indoor'€ concept.

'€œDufan is known mainly for its outdoor rides. The Ice Age attraction is part of the indoor concept,'€ Winarto said in a press conference following the launch ceremony at the park Thursday.

Pembangunan Jaya is the developer and manager of the Ancol Dreamland complex.

Winarto said that Ice Age was a suitable theme as many Indonesians would be familiar with it. He added that the film also had positive, educational aspects.

'€œOne of the reasons we chose Ice Age was because the film promotes good character values and highlights environmental problems such as climate change,'€ he told The Jakarta Post.

The new attraction cost Rp 200 billion (US$176,095) to build.

Construction on Ice Age: Sid'€™s Arctic Adventure, which can hold 750 to 1000 visitors, began in December 2012.

Ancol Dreamland has worked with Whitewater West to design attractions for its water-themed parks since the 1980s.

'€œThis ride will give visitors a realistic experience,'€ said Whitewater West'€™s Asia business development vice president Harley Bostock on Thursday.

Whitewater West'€™s role included water way design for the flume ride and providing the passenger boats.

'€œIce Age is a film set in a fantasy world. Sid'€™s Arctic Adventure is an exciting journey in that special world, through interactive animatronics and animation, built around the usage of our company'€™s boats,'€ Harley added.

The attraction'€™s interior was designed as an arctic setting, the halls of the waiting areas are blasted with air conditioning to reinforce the theme.

Ice Age: Sid'€™s Arctic Tours flume ride is the second of its kind built in the world, after the similar Ice Age Adventure ride in Movie Park Germany.

Winarto said that Dufan would also introduce a new ticketing option, which could guarantee visitors year-long entry with only one up-front fee of Rp 260,000 and the registering of their details after purchase. The price of a normal weekend ticket is Rp 250,000.

The ride is open to the public as of Thursday. (dyl)
