RI needs Rp 382t to reach MDG sanitation goal

T

he Public Works Ministry predicts that Indonesia will need Rp 382 trillion (US$33.23 billion) to reach 100 percent of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on sanitation within the next five years, four times the amount needed for the previous five years.

"On average, achievement in sanitation access is 2 percent a year. In order to meet 100 percent of the MDGs target, we need four times the investment," the ministry's settlement environmental health director, Djoko Mursito, said in Jakarta on Tuesday as quoted by kontan.co.id.

He said the government had set a target of 60 percent of Indonesians having access to proper sanitation and clean water by the end of the year, and next year the figure could grow to 62 percent.

Currently, only 58 percent of the country's total population has access to proper sanitation.

Since the ministry could only provide Rp 114.6 trillion for 2014-2019, equal to 30 percent of the Rp 382 trillion, it had urged local governments to help develop public sanitation facilities.

He also urged local communities to participate in the effort by independently establishing basic sanitation facilities. (nfo)
