he Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) says Jakarta International School (JIS) should temporarily halt the teaching of its kindergarten classes while the allegations of sexual assault involving one of its students are investigated.
'The students are frightened by what has happened to their friend. Currently, the teaching and learning activities are going ahead as usual but the KPAI has suggested the kindergarten close for a while,' KPAI secretary-general Erlinda said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.
She said KPAI had agreed to provide counseling for the students and the commission had established a team for this purpose.
'The counseling can start today. Kak Seto [a reputable child psychologist] has agreed to help,' said Erlinda. She said counseling would be provided for one month and KPAI would evaluate its success.
It was previously reported that a JIS kindergarten student had allegedly been sexually assaulted by cleaners in the toilets at the school.The victim's mother filed a report with the Jakarta Police.
The police have questioned nine people, comprising the victim's mother, teachers, school guards and cleaning staff. The police have named two people, both are cleaners, as suspects. (idb/ebf)
