he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has found evidence that graft suspect Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah bought 26 cars with money she allegedly acquired from rigging a government project.
KPK deputy chairman Busyro Muqoddas said that the discovery would back up the antigraft body's claim that Atut had laundered billions of rupiah, which she collected from rigging the procurement of medical equipment for the Banten administration.
'We are still collecting evidence to prove that the cars are tied to the money laundering allegations,' Busyro said on Wednesday.
The 26 cars are registered under the names of Atut's son, Andika Hazrumy and her daughter Andiara Aprilia Hikmat.
Earlier, the antigraft body said that it would soon charge Atut with money laundering as soon as KPK investigators had collected sufficient evidence.
According to the KPK, the cars, which are mostly high-end models such as the Toyota Vellfires and Mitsubishi Pajero, are worth Rp 24 billion (US$2 million).
Last year, the KPK named Atut and her brother Tubagus Chaeri 'Wawan' Wardana suspects for allegedly bribing former Constitutional Court chief justice Akil Mochtar for him to rule in their favor in a local election dispute in Lebak regency, a regency that Atut's family had little influence.
The KPK also named Wawan and Atut suspects in two separate graft cases involving the procurement of medical equipment for the South Tangerang regency and Banten province administrations. Later, the KPK charged Wawan with money laundering.
