ewly refurbished Radya Pustaka Museum has been criticized by a local artist and cultural expert for failing to provide educational information for visitors, especially students.
The museum was reopened on Tuesday after an eight-month renovation project. The Surakarta administration claimed it had doubled the museum's security measures to prevent theft.
'The museum can inspire the people of this country to be more creative if it provides necessary information [about each piece],' said cultural expert and artist Suprapto Suryodarmo.
The management of Radya Pustaka Museum, he went on, had only put the name of each artifact without providing details. Some collections, such as ancient masks, are only displayed on the wall without name identifying information.
Suprapto suggested the museum management provide a catalogue for visitors.
Responding to the criticism, Radya Pustaka Museum Committee head Purnomo Subagyo said his staff were trying to provide such information, but that it was difficult because many pieces were donated without accompanying information.
'We need to find out the details [of some pieces] to provide the necessary information,' said Purnomo. 'We will also provide a storyline so visitors can see what is so special about the items.'
