City proposes limit on outdoor cigarette ads

G

overnor Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo submitted five draft bylaws on Monday, including on the city'€™s apparatus and billboards, to the City Council.

The remaining draft bylaws submitted were revised bylaws on levies, city-owned development company PD Pembangunan Sarana Jaya and on city-owned waste management firm PD PAL Jaya.

Jokowi pointed out that the draft bylaw on billboards would accommodate electronic outdoor advertisements like those using large electronic displays (LEDs).

'€œWe aim to focus on aspects that can bring added value to the city'€™s spatial planning and architecture. In the long run, we also aim to limit the use of big structures for advertisements, including those promoting cigarettes,'€ he said.

Meanwhile, the draft bylaw on the city'€™s apparatus was proposed as part of the city administration'€™s bureaucratic reform.

Jokowi aims to scrap numerous jobs that are deemed ineffective and then transfer staff to improve the city administration'€™s performance.

Two city-owned firms are expected to receive government participation investment (PMP), with PD Pembangunan Sarana Jaya expected to receive a total of Rp 2 trillion (US$174 million) and PD PAL Jaya Rp 200 billion, according to the proposal.

City Council speaker Ferrial Sofyan said the City Council would address responses to the proposal in a plenary session on Wednesday.
