URAKARTA: Geography department students at Sebelas Maret University (UNS) spent most of a recent car-free day in Surakarta going around the city raising awareness on the importance of environmental preservation.
Students held orations, put up posters and held banners calling on onlookers to help save the Earth. They also cleared Jl. Slamet Riyadi, where the city's April 13 car-free day was being held, of litter. 'We asked visitors to help sign our banners and pledge to do what they can to protect the environment,' field coordinator Bima Sidik said, as quoted by suaramerdeka.com.
Art and literature department students from UNS also took part in the activities. Anisa Kurniasih, one of the coordinators, said that she and her friends had offered face painting services for car-free day visitors. The money raised from these efforts will be used to buy seeds that will then be distributed to kindergarten students and members of the general public for them to grow.
Other activities are also in the works. Later this month, there will also be art exhibits and photography contests at Taman Budaya Surakarta.
