tate-run toll-road operator PT Jasa Marga, as a representative of the government, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday with four Asian toll-road companies from Malaysia, Korea and Japan to speed up toll road construction in Indonesia.

The companies are CMS Works International Limited (Malaysia), POSCO Engineering & Construction (Korea) and West Nippon Expressway Company Limited and Japan Expressway International Company Limited (Japan).

Deputy Public Works Minister Ahmad Hermanto Dardak, who is also the president of the Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia (REAAA), welcomed the signing of the agreement.

"This MoU will help speed up the development of toll roads in Indonesia," Hermanto said in Nusa Dua, Bali, on the sidelines of the International Seminar on Sustainable Road and Green Technology, as quoted by kontan.co.id.

He said that Indonesia had to increase cooperation with other REAAA members, such as Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

Jasa Marga president director Adityawarman said the three countries would become strategic partners in developing road infrastructure across the archipelago.

With Japan, for instance, he said that Indonesia hoped to obtain more technology so that toll roads would not only help support the transportation sector but would also be environmentally friendly.

However, he declined to provide further information on projects involving the three countries. (nfo)
