brief, sudden downpour coupled with strong winds damaged property in several parts of the capital Tuesday afternoon, causing the collapse of a giant billboard in front of the Wisma BCA building in Slipi, West Jakarta, and of a ceiling inside the West Jakarta District Court building.
Hail also reportedly fell in several areas, including Kebon Jeruk, Kemanggisan, Kembangan and Kedoya, all in West Jakarta.
Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) on-duty officer Rendra confirmed that hail had fallen in West Jakarta.
'It happened briefly and is now over,' he said, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Even though the hail was not dangerous, Rendra warned residents to stay alert.
Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency's (BMKG) climate change and air quality center, Edvin Aldrian, said that hail in Jakarta was triggered by a number of factors, including quickly moving air over the sea.
'When air moves very fast it can cause water vapor in the atmosphere to sublimate and fall as ice,' he said, as quoted by tribunnews.com on Tuesday.
The City Police Traffic Management Center (TMC) also reported trees fell during the storm along Jl. Kota Bambu Selatan, West Jakarta, and along Jl. Perdatam, South Jakarta.
