political observer with the University of Indonesia, Effendi Ghazali, says the Democratic Party's presidential convention has too many participants and should have been limited since it started six months ago.
'If the convention's participants were set like that for six months, there should have been evaluation to pare down the participants to perhaps six and then three,' Effendi said as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.
With its electability down 50 percent, he said, the party's 11 convention participants should have also been more proactive in bringing out new ideas for the party as there was no difference between the participants and the party's elites.
Therefore, Effendi questioned the benefit of holding a presidential debate as the last phase of the convention.
'The convention is endless. I've found no deceptive scheme but also I cannot see any future [for the event],' Effendi said.
He hoped that the debate would be open to the media and the public, not only providing space for participants. (put)
