he head of East Jakarta Police's drugs unit, Adj. Sr. Comr. Afrizal says the drugs ring recently uncovered at Cipinang Penitentiary is allegedly connected to drug lord Freddy Budiman.
The drugs ring came to light after the arrest of a guard at the prison, identified only as FM, 28, for allegedly trying to smuggle 565 grams of crystal methamphetamine into the prison.
The police said FM was instructed by HY, a convict in the prison who was part of the group led by Freddy, who was held in the prison before being transferred to Nusa Kambangan maximum security prison in Central Java.
Afrizal said HY was serving a life sentence for a drugs offense but the police had yet to determine what this was. 'That is what we are investigating right now. Up until now, we have found it difficult to do a background check on this convict,' he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
He said that to investigate a convict, the police had to secure a permit from the Justice and Human Rights Ministry. 'We cannot just waltz into the prison and question people,' he said.
Freddy was sentenced to death in July last year for smuggling 1.8 million ecstasy pills. He was an inmate at Cipinang until he was caught operating a drug ring from the prison. He had also been receiving privileges such as illicit conjugal visits from his girlfriend.
