Workers started arriving at 7 a.m. Some of the worker activists started deliveringspeeches.
The workers represent various labor unions, such as the All-Indonesia Workers Union Confederation (KSPSI) and the Confederation of Indonesian Prosperity Trade Unions (KSBSI).
"We will march to the State Palace in around one-and-a-half hours. Prepare!" one of the activists said.
More than 50,000 workers from Jakarta and surrounding areas are expected to rally in the capital today. The Jakarta Police have deployed 18,000 personnel to safeguard the event.
Salary increases and the elimination of outsourcing are among the demands
being made by the workers.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono declared in July last year that May 1 would
be a national holiday from 2014 onward.(gda)
