Jokowi, Ahok slated to meet with dozens of ambassadors

G

overnor Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo opened the two-week Diplomatic Corps Gathering 2014, a meeting of foreign ambassadors, on Monday evening.

The event kicked off with the governor meeting 14 ambassadors from Middle Eastern countries in Tugu Kunstring Paleis in Menteng, Central Jakarta.

After the closed-door meeting, Jokowi said that '€œnothing special'€ was discussed in the forum. '€œThis was a form of silaturahmi [friendly meetings],'€ he said.

Jokowi revealed that the forum discussed various urban issues and the latest updates on Jakarta, including the investment climate in the capital.

He acknowledged, however, that questions regarding his presidential candidacy and potential running mate were raised by the meeting participants. '€œThe answer I gave was just the same as the one I'€™ve always given to [reporters]: no comment yet,'€ he said after the meeting.

On Tuesday, the governor was scheduled to have a meeting with the US Ambassador to Indonesia at a restaurant in Cikini, Central Jakarta.

The following day, the governor will meet with ambassadors from central and eastern European countries. Meanwhile, ambassadors from central, southern and western Asian countries are scheduled to meet with the governor next Monday.

Next week, Jokowi will meet with foreign representatives from East Asia and the Pacific, Southeast Asia and ASEAN member countries, as well as from western, southern and northern European countries.

Heru Budi Hartono, acting gubernatorial and foreign affairs bureau chief, said that the event was aimed at improving relations with foreign representatives in the capital.

'€œThis is an annual event, only this year we'€™ve divided the meetings based on continent. This is a forum where the governor can socialize with the ambassadors, as well as share experiences,'€ Heru told The Jakarta Post.

On Tuesday morning, Deputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama met with Austrian Transportation and Innovation Minister Doris Bures and discussed urban issues in the capital.

Bures was joined by an Austrian delegation comprising private companies, while Ahok was assisted by high-ranking officials, including Transportation Agency head M. Akbar, Public Works Agency head Manggas Rudi Siahaan and Sanitation Agency head Saptastri Ediningtyas.

The meeting was followed by another meeting with the Kazakhstan Ambassador to Indonesia, Askhat T. Orazbay. Ahok said that the meeting, which was attended by a number of Kazakhstan business representatives, focused on business opportunities.
