he National Awakening Party (PKB) finally declared thatit would support the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and its thepresidential candidate Joko Widodo, at a PKB meeting on Saturday in Jombang,East Java.
'The decision was based on what the nation and the public needs,' PKB chairman Muhaimin Iskandar said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
The PKB's internal meeting was held at Tarbiyatunnasyiin Islamic boarding.
'We realize that solid and sincere cooperation is needed to develop Indonesia,' Muhaimin said adding that the PKB demanded a strong government.
According to Muhaimin, the decision to join the PDI-P had been influenced by the advice of Islamic clerics, party executives and constituents.
Separately, as reported by kompas.com, Helmy Faisal Zaini, the head of the PKB executive board, said his party had planned its next political move after joining the coalition.
According to him, the party would suggest an ideological framework to the PDI-P that would champion certain agenda such as bureaucratic reform, an effective and efficient state budget as well as law enforcement.
The PKB's move to join the coalition will benefit the other parties in the group ' the PDI-P and the NasDem Party. (dhi/dic)
