Women'€™s role in coral reef preservation recognized

he World Coral Reef Conference (WCRC) had issued a communiqué,joint statement from all participant countries that encouraged all related partiesto pay more serious attention to coral reef preservation given its strategicvalue for the future of generations.

There were 11 points in the communiqué that went under the theme '€œThe sustainable utilization and conservation of coral reefs, food security, and partnerships and initiatives.'€

The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry'€™s Secretary-General Sharif Widjaja said WCRC would compile all the proposals for sustainable practices and action plans that had been deliberated at the conference and would submit them to the United Nations of Environment Program (UNEP) to be considered further as global agendas.

Director-General of Fish Production, Marketing and Processing of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry Saut Parulian Hutagalung, who announced the communiqué on Friday night, said that among the 11 points, it was the first time the forum recognized the important role of women in coral reef preservation.

A meeting was held on May13,  the first day of the five-day conference, which was aimed at bringing together women who had important roles in coral reef preservation . As many as six female who are active in the preservation of coral reefs were invited to come, shared insight and discuss about how they would continue to contribute.

They were Martha Lotang from Indonesia, Francesca Ngo Windfield from Malaysia, Piwen Langarap from Papua New Guinea, Alma Bool from Philippines, Moira Daisipio from Salomon Islands and Robela Mendes from Timor Leste.
